A neurological disorder affects the central and peripheral nervous system (the muscles, brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, cranial nerves, nerve roots, autonomic nervous system, and neuromuscular junction).  Neurological diagnoses include:

Neurology is the specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system and muscle disorders.   

Many neurologic disorders appear during early development, causing children difficulty with seeing, hearing, speech, thinking, and movement.  Some disorders can be diagnosed at birth but some symptoms may not be apparent until the child has missed developmental milestones or after a traumatic brain injury.  

Neuromuscular diseases include muscular dystrophy and congenital myopathy.  

Genetic and metabolic disorders include Down syndrome, Sturge-Weber syndrome, and leukodystrophies.
